Philanthropy & the Common Good
Taught by Jonathan Hannah
Department of the Hesburgh Program in Public Service, Political Science, Constitutional Studies
Jonathan Hannah serves as an Assistant Director for Strategic Partnerships with the Notre Dame Center for Ethics & Culture. He has taught business communication courses, and teaches an undergraduate political science experiential learning course on Philanthropy & the Common Good in Notre Dame’s College of Arts & Letters. Jonathan holds a B.A. in Political Science from Saint Xavier University, an M.Sc. in Management from Lewis University, a J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy, and an LL.M. from the University of Notre Dame. His writing on philanthropy has appeared in Philanthropy Daily, Real Clear Policy, Philanthropy.org, and Public Discourse. He resides just outside of South Bend, Indiana with his wife and son. In his spare time he enjoys exploring America’s National Parks.

- Each student is member of Board of Directors with equal vote and has 2 responsibilities:
- Placed on a site visit group consisting of 2-3 members. Nonprofits visited by site visit teams are invited to submit proposal for funding
- Signs up to be on a programmatic team (Board of Directors Leadership Team, Social Media & Stewardship Team, Awards Ceremony Team, In-House Counsel Team, Development Team, Evaluation Team, Giving Book Team, Youth Service Bureau Event Team, Volunteer Experience Team, Notre Dame Philanthropy History Team)
- Learn how philanthropy evolved throughout American History
- 3 Board of Directors Meetings throughout semester – final decisions made before leaving for Thanksgiving
- Grant Restrictions
- Minimum grant amount $5K, max amount $25K
- Orgs must be located in Michiana area
- Professor maintains right to veto nomination/award if org disrespects mission of Notre Dame and its Catholic character
- Students are expected to volunteer at a local nonprofit organization for a few hours and write a reflection paper about the experience
