I pledge to have a career wherein I can continue to help marginalized communities. Once I have such a career, I will also dedicate myself to learning new ways of thinking that will facilitate my interactions within these communities and unlearning past ways that inhibit such interactions. I aim to make this my life’s work and I am determined to see it through.

I pledge to give my time and a minimum of 5% of my income to serve less fortunate communities. I pledge to research the organizations I am giving to to ensure my contribution is being spent on actual help, not overhead costs. My goal in the long-term is to start a fund for indigent defendants on death row who need a private defense attorney.

I pledge to donate to organizations working with marginalized and disenfranchised communities in the hopes of creating an environment in which they are free from injustice and inequity and are able to lead lives they value. I will do this by donating at least 10% of my income to organizations and groups addressing the above; by challenging inequities in communities that I am a part of; and by volunteering for organizations and groups working with local communities, wherever they be, to enact change, large and small. I will also learn more about groups separate from those I am a part of (immigrant/refugee) and those I have had contact with (prisoners) in the aims of reaching other marginalized populations.

I pledge to donate 10 percent of my annual income to organizations that promote education, or work with groups that have been marginalized or excluded from society once I am financially stable. I believe in the transformative power of education and want to help those who would not otherwise be able to receive an education. In the meantime, I pledge to donate my time to my community and spend time volunteering each month for organizations that resonate with me. I pledge to fully research all of the organizations I am considering to donate to or volunteer at.

I pledge to donate 5% or more of my annual income to philanthropic efforts. I will start this 5 years after my graduation. As a daughter of refugees, I know how much of a difference even small donations can make in one’s life. I pledge to only donate to organizations or causes that have a connection and respect for the local population, whether that be, Kenyans in Nairobi or Seattleites in Washington. I believe that this is important becasue philanthropy, specifically international philanthropy should not try and “fix a problem” but rather, should try to start conversations that help the local people come up with their own solutions. I pledge to recognize my privilege when donating. I also will research the organizations I donate to, to ensure that I am comfortable with their mission, and the way they go about realizing that mission. In doing so I hope to avoid many of the pitfalls of aid, and better ensure that the money I donate will fully go to either helping the organization or the cause itself.

I pledge to devote my career to advocating for marginalized groups, in whatever capacity that may be. I want to remain grounded in my work, making sure I always listen to the perspectives of those seeking justice and ensuring that I check my privilege, biases, and belief systems. Additionally, I plan to dedicate significant time, energy, and resources to volunteering and speaking out on the social issues that deserve attention.
