I would like to begin giving as soon as I have any sort of income coming in. Whether that is a donation of my money or my service, I would like to abide by the 10% rule on an annual basis. 10% of my time or my salary will be donated to a non-profit organization that I truly believe in.
What is a Giving Goal?
Often, the idealism of youth is lost as one achieves success and acquires material possessions later in life. What was originally considered to be “enough” or even “beyond my wildest dreams” can become just another milestone on one’s quest…
Capturing your current vision of how you wish to give of yourself and your resources in the future could help you plan to give more meaningfully. Revisiting this vision in ten or twenty years could provide a reminder of the ideals of your youth that may shape or re-shape your future actions.
If you have already posted your Giving Goal and would like to update your email for future reminders, please contact [email protected]

While I am a student, I pledge to volunteer with Vanderbilt and help increase access to mental health resources. After I graduate and work, I pledge 3% of my income to philanthropic organizations with demonstrated effectiveness.

My philanthropic goal, in life, is to give both effectively and affectively. When giving from a distance, I find it reasonable to lean more heavily on Singer’s and Gates’s philosophies, so I predict I will try to make financial contributions to causes that do the most good for the most people with my limited resources. When giving at proximity, however, I intend to lean more heavily and Addams’s and Carnegie’s philosophies, and thus intend to give my time to those causes which I will benefit most from my hands-on involvement, when considering my skill set. I do hope that I will be able to make financial contributions to important causes one day, but I cannot predict my future financial circumstances, so I don’t know if this will be a huge part of my adult life. I can however say with certainty that I will continue to make the giving of my time a priority into my adult life. The importance of giving back to the community, to me, is twofold. I intend to give because I think all people should feel obligated, as I do, to give back, if and when they can. After all, the public good cannot be nourished without public participation, but I also intend to give for the simple and selfish reason that it makes me feel good.

My personal giving goal currently is centric to issues most urgently at immediate threat by a government or legislative entity that wishes to operate against the greatest needs of the people. Currently this definition for giving most closely aligns with reproductive freedoms, but in a greater sense, it can align with any way the government wishes to use it’s power for the best interest of a radical non-majority group. This could also currently apply to tax cuts for the most rich and wealthy Americans over the middle class that needs those benefits to survive and prosper. I do not think this kind of support is politically oriented, but rather oriented on the best interests of Americans as a whole. Our lives are shaped by lawmakers, and if these lawmakers are definitionally not interested in making the lives of Americans the best they can possibly be, I think philanthropy needs to be applied to aid those in need.

My giving goal is to create sustainable, long-term impact through thoughtful, hands-on philanthropy that addresses fundamental societal issues such as education, poverty, and environmental sustainability, inspired by ethical and strategic leaders like Ratan Tata. This approach emphasizes community-driven, impactful solutions beyond mere financial contributions.
