As TCU students, we hope to build upon the school’s mission and become ethical leaders in our community. Through the Nature of Giving course and the advice of guest speakers like the Jeff and Kelly Dillard, Ed Schollmaier, and John Robinson, we have learned of the importance of investing in our community through providing financial support, giving time and labor, and sharing our own expertise and passions. As the 2016 Nature of Giving class, we commit ourselves to giving our time and finances, while maintaining the mindsets of givers throughout our lives. Therefore, I pledge to donate 10% of my monthly personal income to a cause(s) of my choosing. I pledge to practice responsible philanthropy by conducting due diligence before giving to an organization. In addition to financial support, I commit myself to volunteering with organizations in order to foster personal relationships in the community. I will work to better the local and/or international community by establishing at least one partnership with a charitable organization. In order to remain actively engaged, I will review my donations and involvement annually. (I think it’s important to develop a habit of giving from the very beginning of my professional career. I also know myself and know that accountability that comes with being a part of a group would be more motivating to actually follow through on giving.)
What is a Giving Goal?
Often, the idealism of youth is lost as one achieves success and acquires material possessions later in life. What was originally considered to be “enough” or even “beyond my wildest dreams” can become just another milestone on one’s quest…
Capturing your current vision of how you wish to give of yourself and your resources in the future could help you plan to give more meaningfully. Revisiting this vision in ten or twenty years could provide a reminder of the ideals of your youth that may shape or re-shape your future actions.
If you have already posted your Giving Goal and would like to update your email for future reminders, please contact [email protected]
Step 1
Have a healthy and vigorous dialogue in your class on the general idea of having a personal Giving Goal as a college student.
Step 2
Set a Giving Goal concerning your future giving plans.
Step 3
Share a brief statement of your Giving Goals on The Philanthropy Lab’s portal as a way to inspire others to do the same. You may post anonymously to the public if you wish.
Step 4
Share your permanent email address and phone number with The Philanthropy Lab, for the sole purpose of the reminder mechanism, so we can remind you of your goal in 5 year increments for 20 years into the future.

I pledge to practice responsible philanthropy by conducting due diligence before giving to an organization. I will work to better the local and/or international community by establishing at least one partnership with a charitable organization. In order to remain actively engaged, I will review my donations and involvement annually. (I am signing the class giving pledge because I feel that it covers everything that I would want out of my own personal giving pledge. If I were to write my own, then it would just be a regurgitation of this pledge. Specifically, I connect with the portion that focuses on remebering what we have learned from guest speakers and the portion that establishes review of donations regularly.)

It is too hard to will oneself to continue giving money away, so a pledge makes complete sense to me. I think that 5% is a great starting percentage. Right now, 5% of my monthly income is about $50-100, which I think is a great number. After a year, that is about $1000 in giving, which is something I would be very proud of as a recent college graduate (about to attend graduate school). As my income grows, in addition to my available time to volunteer, I expect to raise my percentage of annual giving. I would love to revise my pledge every 5 years to reallocate my giving based on my earnings.]

I have grown up in a family that gives both time and money pointedly, and these ideals were passed down to me from my parents. Coming into this class I knew that I wanted to move forward with giving as I got older and more financially independent, and what I have learned in this class has helped me solidify this decision. Through what we have learned in this class I feel even more confident in my decision to sign this pledge.)

In order to remain actively engaged, I will review my donations and involvement annually. [At the beginning of discussing the giving pledge process, I wanted to write my own personal giving pledge tailored to my passions, my budget, and my purpose of giving. However, as the class continued to discuss our class pledge and adapt it to fulfill everyone’s giving pledge goals, I learned that many of my classmates have similar passions, budgets, and purposes of giving that I do. Therefore, I leaned more towards signing a pledge that the whole group came up with together. Then, as this final class pledge was revealed in class, it was exactly everything that I would have said in my own personal giving pledge. It has a personalized percentage for giving, it explains the many methods of giving (time, money, labor, etc.), and it embodies the mindset of a genuine “giver.” Because of this, I feel that this class pledge perfectly fits my giving pledge requirements. Furthermore, this giving pledge allows me to commit myself to a pledge given by a group of respectable, wonderful, loving, and purpose-driven classmates who I also consider friends. It is an honor to be a part of the same giving pledge as a group like this, and it will keep me accountable in my future giving endeavors. Therefore, I sign this giving pledge with enthusiasm and satisfaction.]
