After graduating from Rice and entering the workforce, I hope to actively participate with and donate to organizations that are effective and prominent in the area surrounding me. 5 years after graduating I hope to have developed a more consistent, yearly donation pattern (such as 5 -10% of my income). Areas of interest that I may focus on are charities that aid in helping women and domestic abuse survivors in low income areas.
What is a Giving Goal?
Often, the idealism of youth is lost as one achieves success and acquires material possessions later in life. What was originally considered to be “enough” or even “beyond my wildest dreams” can become just another milestone on one’s quest…
Capturing your current vision of how you wish to give of yourself and your resources in the future could help you plan to give more meaningfully. Revisiting this vision in ten or twenty years could provide a reminder of the ideals of your youth that may shape or re-shape your future actions.

Step 1
Have a healthy and vigorous dialogue in your class on the general idea of having a personal Giving Goal as a college student.
Step 2
Set a Giving Goal concerning your future giving plans.
Step 3
Share a brief statement of your Giving Goals on The Philanthropy Lab’s portal as a way to inspire others to do the same. You may post anonymously to the public if you wish.
Step 4
Share your permanent email address and phone number with The Philanthropy Lab, for the sole purpose of the reminder mechanism, so we can remind you of your goal in 5 year increments for 20 years into the future.

Upon choosing a career in medicine, I dedicate myself in lifelong learning and giving. I cannot tell the impact with a specific amount of money in the future, nor do I want to obey raw materialism in giving with a specific percentage of my income. I am offering my endless effort in my career path to reach the maximum good.

Throughout my life, I have been engaged in the role as a “giver”. However, all the experiences are rather spontaneous, not very consistent or in regular basis. Therefore, I would like to pledge now to donate my voluntary time to be more involved in community services at least once a month and to donate 5% of my discretionary income to causes that support equal rights and global poverty.

Philanthropy plays an important role in my life and I plan to continue to make philanthropy one of my priorities. The importance of giving back to my community, the larger community and those individuals that need help was emphasized by parents since I was a little girl. As a child it was easier for me to give of myself and my time to different causes. However, as I pursue my professional career and earn a salary, I plan to make philanthropy in the form of money a priority as well. I plan to support and partner in the success of my community and organizations I am currently involved in through donations of time and money. In the future, I hope to expand my knowledge, educate myself about other organizations, become a member of new communities and support these new groups.

Philanthropy has played an important role throughout my life as I have been on both the giving and receiving ends of it. For this reason, I will continue giving my time in volunteer work as often as possible in the future. Since I have fortunately been the recipient of scholarships for my education, I additionally plan to give 5% of my income once I graduate to organizations in my local community that support the education of girls in high school and college. Giving to such organizations will allow me to contribute to the same cause that helped me get to where I am today.

Philanthropy has played a great role in my past as a receiver and I see philanthropy as playing a large role in my future as a giver. In the years after my graduation, I hope to become a more active and self-aware philanthropist by fusing a passion for helping others with the power of knowledge. I plan to continue to use my strengths, interests, and network to help others and aid my philanthropic endeavors and decisions. While I do not want to choose a specific percentage of my income to donate, I plan to give perpetually make financial donations as well as efforts in my career path to impact society and inequalities.
