I pledge to do work that is not motivated by profit, but instead by a desire to correct societal injustices. I challenge myself to be conscientious towards those on the receiving end of marginalization and oppression, both locally and abroad. This means that my projected earnings will likely be modest at best (this seems to be the case in many social-justice careers). As such, I do not feel that it is currently realistic for me to choose a specific percentage of my income. I wholeheartedly pledge, however, to leverage my time, skills, and resources to causes that I see as urgent. I will do pro bono work if I become a lawyer. I will donate a portion of my income to organizations yearly, a portion that may be slightly uncomfortable for me to give. I will also raise my children (if I have them) to believe that it is their obligation to give to those in need.
What is a Giving Goal?
Often, the idealism of youth is lost as one achieves success and acquires material possessions later in life. What was originally considered to be “enough” or even “beyond my wildest dreams” can become just another milestone on one’s quest…
Capturing your current vision of how you wish to give of yourself and your resources in the future could help you plan to give more meaningfully. Revisiting this vision in ten or twenty years could provide a reminder of the ideals of your youth that may shape or re-shape your future actions.
If you have already posted your Giving Goal and would like to update your email for future reminders, please contact [email protected]
Step 1
Have a healthy and vigorous dialogue in your class on the general idea of having a personal Giving Goal as a college student.
Step 2
Set a Giving Goal concerning your future giving plans.
Step 3
Share a brief statement of your Giving Goals on The Philanthropy Lab’s portal as a way to inspire others to do the same. You may post anonymously to the public if you wish.
Step 4
Share your permanent email address and phone number with The Philanthropy Lab, for the sole purpose of the reminder mechanism, so we can remind you of your goal in 5 year increments for 20 years into the future.

I pledge to dedicate a portion of my caseload and work to pro-bono and non-profit work, and to keep my work in the field of law focused on advocating for justice and equity. I hope to give a significant portion of my income to philanthropic causes in which I believe when I reach the point of making a comfortable amount of money. My decision to do this will be rooted in my belief that we are all called to serve other humans and create a strong presence of positive energy in the world.

I pledge to be mindful, purposeful, and strategic with my philanthropic giving. I believe that in every stage of my life I will be able to give back, whether it is financially or through volunteer work. My financial giving goal is to give annually to a charity of my choice, and in the next 5 years at least 5 percent of my salary. I want my financial contributions to fund projects that I feel reflect my values.

I pledge my goal with the idea of abundance in mind. Rather than state a number or a percentage that will either be too much, or too little, depending on my ability, I pledge to undertake a life of service and giving. This lifestyle will touch every aspect of my life, from my effort to maintain happy and healthy relationships with my loved ones, my effort in my career to serve our societies most marginalized populations, or my effort to devote time and resources to causes greater than myself. There is one specific element of my giving goal to develop and commit to wholeheartedly. I pledge to develop a system for cutting out the excess material and spending in my life, and then allocate those saved funds to the causes listed above. Much of my spending is unnecessary and wasteful. I will take the time to consider a defined system that identifies the material goods in my life and whether I truly need them, and identifies my spending and works to reduce it to only what I truly need.

Following graduation I plan to donate 5% of my income as deemed able. If unable to provide a monetary donation, I will volunteer my time to assist programs aligning with my philanthropic beliefs. Outside of my own work and contribution I will also work with others to share philanthropic values to promote the benefit and shared duty of everyone. Further, upon consistent re-evaluation, I will remain willing to shift my focus on giving based on current and existing local and international circumstances.

I will pledge to continuously and consciously participate in philanthropic endeavors regardless of my place in life. I will do so by giving whatever I have the ability to give, whether it be physical work, monetary donations or any other form of aid.
