I pledge to give to nonprofits that empower communities to be the primary change-makers within their own communities. More specifically, but not exclusively, I would like to give time and $ to organizations in the U.S. that work towards eliminating inequality and increasing the social safety net. Additionally, I pledge to give to my time and resources to friends and family who can always count on me in a time of need.
What is a Giving Goal?
Often, the idealism of youth is lost as one achieves success and acquires material possessions later in life. What was originally considered to be “enough” or even “beyond my wildest dreams” can become just another milestone on one’s quest…
Capturing your current vision of how you wish to give of yourself and your resources in the future could help you plan to give more meaningfully. Revisiting this vision in ten or twenty years could provide a reminder of the ideals of your youth that may shape or re-shape your future actions.
If you have already posted your Giving Goal and would like to update your email for future reminders, please contact [email protected]
Step 1
Have a healthy and vigorous dialogue in your class on the general idea of having a personal Giving Goal as a college student.
Step 2
Set a Giving Goal concerning your future giving plans.
Step 3
Share a brief statement of your Giving Goals on The Philanthropy Lab’s portal as a way to inspire others to do the same. You may post anonymously to the public if you wish.
Step 4
Share your permanent email address and phone number with The Philanthropy Lab, for the sole purpose of the reminder mechanism, so we can remind you of your goal in 5 year increments for 20 years into the future.

I pledge to give my time and support to organizations that serve patients and families affected by complex health conditions such as Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) and related diseases. I hope to help increase awareness and support for patients, siblings, parents, and caregivers of individuals with my brother’s illness and other health conditions. When I can, I will also donate to various nonprofit organizations that help patients and families as well as other nonprofit organizations that serve individuals in need. I hope to increase the amount I donate as I get older.

I pledge to embody the framework of effective altruism by donating 15% of my yearly income to charitable endeavors that make an impact on the world. Specifically, I aim to give to causes on which I’ve done extensive research. I want to continue to make use of platforms that hold organizations accountable like GiveWell and Charity Navigator. I want to make sure that any resources I provide to an organization makes a visible and tangible impact on its recipients. I pledge to give to a variety of causes including legal aid, global health, education, and development. Donating money isn’t the only way I vow to make use of my resources. I also pledge to uphold my commit to animal welfare by rescuing and fostering parenting as well as advocating and volunteering on behalf of our four-legged friends. I would also love to tutor and advise students to succeed and become the best version of themselves. Ultimately, I pledge to make use of my resources in a variety of ways beyond the economic. My commitment to effective altruism will be expressed and embodied in more ways than one.

I pledge to devote my life to a career that improves the world in some tangible way, whether that is through research, education, social reform, or working at a nonprofit. Beginning in college, I pledge to make a monthly donation amounting to at least 10% of my income towards a cause or an organization that I have researched and whose mission I wish to promote. I hope that I can successfully balance giving money and time away with personal indulgences/things I do for pleasure, and I will look for ways that those activities can coincide rather than compete. I hope that I can make a positive impact on the world beyond my personal circle.

I pledge to cultivate and maintain a life deeply rooted in public service and community engagement. I believe that commitment to public good is something that should be part of a consistent life routine instead of only appearing when prompted – as such, I commit to engage in work that supports my community at least once every two weeks, keeping in mind that this is a floor and certainly not a ceiling for giving time. In addition, I plan to deeply assess my financial capability every few months to determine how much I can systematically give to causes I research and believe in, on top of spontaneous giving to causes when given the opportunity (e.g. attending charity events, meeting a fundraiser, etc.). Lastly, I commit to always think deeply about how the work I do can be inclusive, aware, positive, and engaged. I believe that even the most robust and thought-through standards should be consistently re-evaluated to either maintain consistency and commitment to core values or improve from experience.

I pledge to continue to spend a portion of my time during my undergraduate experience contributing in non-profits and equity initiatives. After graduation, I pledge to intentionally pursue a career dedicated towards giving and seek jobs in the non-profit sector, dedicating my time and if possible a portion of my income to organizations that align with my values and passions. Through this experience I will strive to check the opportunities I have and do my best to spread the resources to communities and individuals who cannot say the same.
