I pledge to give 10% of my salary to either my church or another faith-based organization that serves basic needs or important issues, as well as 2% of my salary right now, possibly more out of college, to a local non-profit that does work that aligns with my values and important needs.
What is a Giving Goal?
Often, the idealism of youth is lost as one achieves success and acquires material possessions later in life. What was originally considered to be “enough” or even “beyond my wildest dreams” can become just another milestone on one’s quest…
Capturing your current vision of how you wish to give of yourself and your resources in the future could help you plan to give more meaningfully. Revisiting this vision in ten or twenty years could provide a reminder of the ideals of your youth that may shape or re-shape your future actions.
If you have already posted your Giving Goal and would like to update your email for future reminders, please contact [email protected]
Step 1
Have a healthy and vigorous dialogue in your class on the general idea of having a personal Giving Goal as a college student.
Step 2
Set a Giving Goal concerning your future giving plans.
Step 3
Share a brief statement of your Giving Goals on The Philanthropy Lab’s portal as a way to inspire others to do the same. You may post anonymously to the public if you wish.
Step 4
Share your permanent email address and phone number with The Philanthropy Lab, for the sole purpose of the reminder mechanism, so we can remind you of your goal in 5 year increments for 20 years into the future.

I plan to begin giving as soon as I have a steady income. I want to start with giving at least 10% to my local church and/or Christian organizations, but I hope to increase the percent I give as my income increases. Philanthropy is important to me. This is something that God graciously invites me into and I know it will be a blessing to myself and to others. I want to use my money to help other people.

I hope to eventually earn a six-figure salary (meaning anywhere from $150,000-$250,000) in order to be able to comfortably donate about 5-7% of it after taking care of my own (family’s) expenses. I would most like to donate to causes that advance access to healthcare and education in the impoverished areas of Central Asia, Africa, and my own home country, Pakistan. I already planned to give to these causes and areas of the world in the beginning of this course, but spending the semester working with Mercy Project and seeing their vision of ending child slavery in Ghana be a success further strengthened my desire. Additionally, I hope to continue doing the volunteer work I currently do for children and women regarding religious and secular education, and feminine healthcare needs well into the future.

For my giving goal, I want to give at least 5% of my yearly salary to nonprofit organizations where I see the best fit at the time. In addition to the monetary goal that I have, I want to volunteer at least 40 hours at local nonprofits wherever I live to help the community and people around me.

As I graduate, equipped with the tools I learned in class and from the philanthropy lab, I hope to apply my learnings to my everyday life. With that being said, I want to give at least 5% of my paycheck for my first few years out of college, with goals to increase that percentage amount as time progresses. Additionally, I plan to not only give of my money, but of my time as well. I hope to serve the community weekly, and am eager to get plugged into local philanthropies in the area I will be moving to post college. I hope to cling fast to the values of integrity, love of others, and my faith throughout not only my philanthropic giving and serving, but throughout my everyday life.

After graduation with my salary, I will be tithing 10% to my local church. After that, I want to start out giving 2% to charity, and then over time increase this. I want to also volunteer my time to an organization that I feel passionate about. I think that over time I will be able to give a larger % to a philanthropy, but consistently I want to volunteer and be hands on.
