Throughout my career trajectory, I hope to be able to acquire enough resources to give monetarily to causes that I am passionate about. I want for these to be causes that are big in scale and pressing in nature, but also where my money would be most impactful. I also hope to give my time to whatever volunteer services or pro-bono services my skillsets are useful for that may arise throughout my career or in my personal life. I ultimately want to have more influence and impact in the philanthropic sector in the longer-term trajectory of my career.
What is a Giving Goal?
Often, the idealism of youth is lost as one achieves success and acquires material possessions later in life. What was originally considered to be “enough” or even “beyond my wildest dreams” can become just another milestone on one’s quest…
Capturing your current vision of how you wish to give of yourself and your resources in the future could help you plan to give more meaningfully. Revisiting this vision in ten or twenty years could provide a reminder of the ideals of your youth that may shape or re-shape your future actions.
If you have already posted your Giving Goal and would like to update your email for future reminders, please contact [email protected]
Step 1
Have a healthy and vigorous dialogue in your class on the general idea of having a personal Giving Goal as a college student.
Step 2
Set a Giving Goal concerning your future giving plans.
Step 3
Share a brief statement of your Giving Goals on The Philanthropy Lab’s portal as a way to inspire others to do the same. You may post anonymously to the public if you wish.
Step 4
Share your permanent email address and phone number with The Philanthropy Lab, for the sole purpose of the reminder mechanism, so we can remind you of your goal in 5 year increments for 20 years into the future.

Upon graduation, I plan on committing 5-8% of my salary once I achieve financial stability. Additionally, I want to commit my time towards nonprofits, because a lot of organizations depend on volunteerism to obtain their goals. My hope is to be able to give back to communities that have shaped who I am today and show others the worth and love that everyone deserves.

Dear Angela, I hope you are doing well. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, you have a stable career and everything. That being said, I hope that you have began donating some money. I am not quite sure how much money of our salary is appropriate but I definitely know some places to donate to. Please donate to Congenital Hyperinsulinism, Beckwith Wiedemann Syndrome, and to Opsoclonus Myoclonus Syndrome. Thank you! Best regards, Angela

After I reach financial stability where I can comfortably afford my cost of living alongside save some money, I would want to aim to give 1-5% of my income annually. Unfortunately, I don’t have an actual estimate of what financial stability looks like to me at this point, but once I reach it, would love to start giving notably.

In 5 years from graduation, I would like to be a volunteer working towards an organization where I can see a direct impact, ideally on a long-term scale—in whichever field that may be. In 10 years from graduation, I would like to seriously consider donating a regular amount of money towards one or more charitable organizations. Will that be rail passenger or transportation advocacy? Something related to global warming? Will it be towards a local organization—will I “still” be living in Portland, Ore., or back in the Bay Area, or living out my dream to settle in the Midwest? Somewhere else entirely? How is Canada doing…do you still visit, even after reaching the end goal of visiting every Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant there? Will future trips help connect me to other locales, like Monterrey, Mex. (courtesy of Liceo, March 2025), Kashi, P.R.C. (Xinjiang, Spring 2024), or another country entirely? This giving goal is being written in my final class after four years at Stanford University…it has been an enjoyable experience, and hard to believe we’ve reached the end!

I pledge to donate between 5%-10% of my salary to various philanthropic efforts upon graduation. I hope to identify organizations that will serve vulnerable populations both in my local community and the larger global stage. I plan on putting the money in a separate account automatically to make giving a habit, not a discretionary choice.
