Laura Lieber is a Professor of Religious Studies (with a secondary appointment in German) and Director of the Duke Center for Jewish Studies. Her research focuses on Jewish texts and traditions, as they respond to the changing contexts of Jewish life from antiquity to the present. Her teaching spans subjects from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) to Jewish Ethics and Women in Judaism. Through her work as Director of the Center for Jewish Studies, she collaborates closely with colleagues across the university (and with UNC) on a range of projects and events, including the Center for Strategic Philanthropy and Civil Society of the Stanford School. She received her B.A. from the University of Arkansas in English Literature and Ph.D. in the History of Judaism from the University of Chicago. She taught at Middlebury College for five years before moving to Duke in 2008.
