RUDA is a feminist digital media outlet, born in 2017 from meetings and ideas of the Editorial Board of Prensa Comunitaria given the urgent and latent need to have a digital space where to evidence and make visible the struggles that women face. RUDA was launched in January 2020, after a two-year-long process of reflection and creation that involved the paths and bodies of its founders. Now it is a digital feminist media outlet that engages in journalism and research from that holds a feminist approach as its transversal element.
As a media outlet we want to tell stories, break with victimization, contribute new and different narratives, and explore different formats as a way to dignify the lives of women. We do so coming from the angle of journalism and feminist communication. Therefore, we have prioritized four main editorial axes that guide our work:
• Historical memory: This is a space to remember and to guarantee non-repetition. We deeply believe in the transgenerational transmission and vindication of the struggles of those who are no longer here and who opened paths, the search for justice, and healing for women.
• Body and territory: This space addresses the struggles for the defense of territory and women’s autonomy, the search for justice in cases of violence, and healing as a political exercise.
• Abya Yala: This is a space in which the histories, struggles, and issues related to women from all over the continent are addressed. Our point of departure is the recognition of the region as a territory that was inhabited and recognized before colonization, so we refer to this space as Abya Yala—not America.
• Inks: This is a space for reflection in which women from different territories write and communicate their feelings, thoughts, and knowledge to others.
We seek to strengthen the work of our team by expanding our network of feminist journalists and researchers who will work on the 2023 general elections in Guatemala, and their capacity to produce and disseminate information.
For this, we will develop multi-format journalistic products (articles, reports, video reports, interviews, profiles, among others) that will be disseminated through our website and social networks in which three important macro issues will be addressed: political parity and women’s participation; inclusion in government proposals; and violence. We chose this focus to encourage further reflection, debate, and analysis for informed decision making in the 2023 elections.
