Plaza Pública is an online media engaged in analysis, investigations, and debates based in Guatemala City, Central America. It was founded on February 22, 2011 by the Universidad Rafael Landívar and centers human rights, democracy, and the search for truth. It focuses on making visible the dynamics of power and investigating those that negatively affect the public’s dignity and wellbeing. We believe in innovation and being on the forefront, and we believe in the role of the community of readers as guarantors of the independence and quality of the media.
Plaza Pública’s dual training program for departmental journalists is a hybrid educational model with 60 online and 20 in-person sessions. Using a gender focus specialized in portraying inequalities, it is currently the only program that trains young people (mainly women) who want to engage in quality local journalism. Our commitment to this training program is great given that the vast majority of its graduates are now prominent journalists in other digital media, thus raising the quality of the various newsrooms and the products they offer Guatemalan society.
