Agencia Ocote

Ocote is a media outlet founded in Guatemala and led mainly by women. We produce journalism from diverse perspectives, in dialogue with culture and reflection to promote engagement, conversation, and encounters between Central American citizens. We seek to contribute to a critical and sensitive Central American public that makes informed decisions to build a democratic society where human rights are guaranteed (our vision).

Despite the authoritarian wave in the Central American region (especially in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua), the constant threats to democracy and the freedoms of citizens and the press in the region, and in a context in which all human rights are threatened—especially the right to freedom of expression and information—journalistic work does not stop and we are convinced that silence is not an option.

Ocote is a digital media outlet that is eminently urban, which has sought to expand its audiences using an intersectional and intercultural approach. That is because there is an undeniable gap between urban media and those located in rural areas as regards access to information, media consumption, and the available tools to engage in journalism.
