Philanthropic Leadership
Course Taught by Carla Ingrando
Department: Cornell SC Johnson College of Business
Dr. Carla Ingrando serves as a major gift officer for the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University, where she is charged with strengthening alumni relations and maximizing philanthropy for the college. Carla is thrilled to be teaching “Philanthropic Leadership,” a course for 2-year residential MBA and other graduate and professional students, for the third consecutive year.
At Cornell, Carla has previously served as Executive Director of University Corporate and Foundation Relations, Interim Assistant Dean for Alumni Affairs and Development for Computing and Information Science, and Associate Dean for Alumni Affairs and Development for the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. Prior to joining Cornell, Carla served as the Senior Director of Foundation Relations at the University of Notre Dame. Before embarking on a career in university development, Carla was a faculty member at Denison University, Marylhurst University, and worked as a program officer for the Michigan Humanities Council.
She holds a Ph.D. in Theology from Notre Dame and earned her M.Div. from Vanderbilt, her M.P.A. from the University of South Carolina, and her B.A. from Furman University. In addition to her work, Carla enjoys reading, hiking, and traveling to warm destinations, particularly during the month of February.
Unique Course Components
Three guideposts for giving:
- All gift/grant recipients must be 501(c)3 organizations working in Tompkins County, NY with at least two years of activity;
- 20% of total gift/grant amount split evenly among the non-profits with site visits or otherwise substantially supported our learning in the course;
- Gifts/grants are for general operating support
- Guest speakers including Phil Buchanan and a subject matter expert to discuss the Form 990
- Students have two team-based responsibilities
- Research & Site Visit Team
- Self-select into groups (education, arts/humanities, health/human services, climate funding non-profits). Each student will join a research and site visit team that consists of three or four members.
- Programmatic Team
- Board Leadership Team (organizational management) – create Giving Philosophy and Board Charter documents
- Giving Book Team (communication/fundraising) – Learn how local non-profit organizations raise funds via printed documents, virtual documents, videos, etc. Determine the best way to raise funds to support the class Foundation Board, and execute this vision with the help of your colleagues;
- Giving Ceremony Team (communication/publicity) – Develops a strategy for publicity of the class Foundations gift/grants for the express purpose of celebrating the good work of the organizations awarded.
