Values in Action: The Duke Philanthropy Lab

Laura Lieber is a Professor of Religious Studies (with a secondary appointment in German) and Director of the Duke Center for Jewish Studies. Her research focuses on Jewish texts and traditions, as they respond to the changing contexts of Jewish life from antiquity to the present. Her teaching spans subjects from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) to Jewish Ethics and Women in Judaism. Through her work as Director of the Center for Jewish Studies, she collaborates closely with colleagues across the university (and with UNC) on a range of projects and events, including the Center for Strategic Philanthropy and Civil Society of the Stanford School. She received her B.A. from the University of Arkansas in English Literature and Ph.D. in the History of Judaism from the University of Chicago. She taught at Middlebury College for five years before moving to Duke in 2008.
Heavy emphasis on philanthropy across different religious traditions
- Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Humanism
- 8 different guest speakers (many to represent the different religions)
Each class is divided into 2 parts:
- Part 1: “Seminar” class discussion, guest speakers, lecture, etc (THEORY)
- Part 2: “Team Meeting” research issue areas/orgs, review proposals, prepare presentations (PRACTICE)
Field Trip to Washington DC to visit the “Giving in America” exhibit
Students attend at least 2 Foundation Impact Research Group (FIRG) seminars
- Seminars by guest speakers from a variety of high-profile foundations
Over Thanksgiving Break, students assigned to talk with at least one family member or close friend about giving and doing good in his or her experience, in preparation for creating their own “ethical will”/Giving Goal
“Visit to the Archives“ – archivist explains the history of the Dukes
